Fun for… flower fairies
There’s something so peaceful and satisfying about flower activities - they can entrance children and adults for hours on end. Try a daisy chain competition with a prize for the longest chain, or use the chains as tiaras, bracelets and necklaces in a game of flower princesses. Flower pressing is a wonderful traditional craft and can easily be done at home. Pick those with flat, round petals, such as buttercups, roses, pansies, and marigolds. Put the flowers carefully between two sheets of paper, then place them in the middle of a big, heavy book. Two weeks or so later you’ll have beautiful pressed flowers, perfect for sticking on a card or collage, or to decorate a scrapbook.
Fun for… budding Beckhams
Get active kids burning off that energy with some good old-fashioned sports day fun. The egg and spoon race is a great way for them to practice that essential hand-to-eye co-ordination, while the sack race, the three-legged race and the space hopper race are likely to prove more difficult than they expect! You don’t need a horde of kids to compete, either. Just use the kitchen timer to record ‘personal bests’ so children can beat their own records – or why not burn a few calories by taking part yourself?
Fun for… little adventurers
With a bit of imagination, your garden, local park or woodland can become an unexplored wilderness – perfect for a game of ‘Expeditions’. Just send kids out with ‘provisions’ (a bag or two of Ryvita® Salt & Vinegar Minis will keep them going through tough terrain) and the materials to build a ‘base’ (try a pop-up beach tent camouflaged with branches, or garden canes tied together at the top plus an old sheet for a wigwam’). Make a bug box (an old jar with air holes punched in the lid will be fine) so that the future naturalists can capture and identify new species. And after a hard day’s fighting their way through the jungle, be prepared to come to the rescue of the hungry explorers with emergency food supplies!
Fun for…the young at heart
Old-fashioned outdoor fun isn’t just for the kids. For a family gathering in the garden, on the beach or in the park, take along a few bats and balls and you’ve got a ready-made game of rounders or cricket, with coats serving as bases or wickets. If you’re after a more genteel activity, why not throw a traditional Victorian garden party? You don’t have to stick to just tea and thin-cut cucumber sandwiches, either. Try Ryvita® Multi-Seed Thins with a selection of dips, or enhance your cheese board with Ryvita® Golden Rye Crackers for Cheese. Show off your baking skills with fairy cakes, or celebrate the English summer with strawberries and cream - then round off the day with a civilised game of croquet, skittles, or boules for that Continental touch.
